The resolution adopted by the Northern Provincial Council is another extension of the arm of communalism. The JVP states:

Recently, the Northern Provincial Council adopted a resolution for an international investigation for war crimes rejecting any local inquiry mechanism. It also proposed that the investigation report should be presented to the Human Rights Council in March. This proposal would not have any legal commitment but the JVP focuses on several political factors the resolution brings out.

At the presidential election held on 8th January the 9 year dictatorial rule of the former president terminated. It is a victory for the Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim masses of this country. There was no conflict of opinion among the Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim masses regarding this change. The masses that had voted in earlier elections with the mentality of separation this time used their votes for the aspiration of acting together as the Sri Lankan Nation. However, the resolution adopted indicates an attempt to distance such aspirations of our people. What is required is for the people and specially the politicians to act with a mentality of togetherness.

There was an attempt to spread communalism in the South by spreading rumours that Army camps in the North were pelted with stones after the presidential election. Now, the Northern Provincial Council too suddenly, within a month of the election victory, has adopted a resolution asking for an international probe. This resolution too is another extension of the arm of communalism. When masses stretch their hands for national unity the communalists, unable to comprehend the new political situation that has been created or willfully, wriggle into the dark caves of communalism. They also invite people to follow them.

After considering this entire situation, the JVP vehemently condemns the resolution adopted by the Northern Provincial Council. Also, we fraternally invite Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim and masses of other nationalities to correctly comprehend the communalist tendencies that are surfacing and to rally for national unity.
