At the conclusion of the forthcoming Provincial Council elections, one fourth of the UNP Parliamentarians will cross over to the government, said Economic Development Deputy Minister S.M.Chandrasena.
He made this statement at a media conference held yesterday at his office.
Minister Chandrasena said holding elections in the Northern Province is a great victory for the government. People in the North will decide the winning party. The government has already completed several development projects in the Northern Province including infrastructure development, resettlement of displaced families, economic development activities, etc. without even leaving any work for the Provincial Council.
“The government has converted the North from one of gun culture to a normal civil society. So all the people in North live peacefully and happily. Creating a peaceful environment to hold elections in the North is a significant chapter in recent Sri Lankan history.” said the minister.
He also said the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has nominated former Supreme Court judge C.V. Vigneshwaran as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the Northern Provincial Council polls. Former High Court Judge P B Warawewa is also expected to contest the Central Provincial Council Elections from the United National Party (UNP).This shows that these former Judges have been engaged in politics even when they were judges. So, it is doubtful whether they did their duty properly. Therefore, we request from the President to call for a review of the judgments given by these judges.
“The Opposition says that people will send the present government home. They tried to do this about 19 times. But they have not succeeded.
As a people friendly minister, I challenge Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to contest for Provincial Council elections and win. If he could win I will resign from my minister post. It is clear that he cannot even win a local government election.
This shows the failure of the UNP and the leader. The JVP is also experiencing the same situation. If these parties don’t policies, they will never be successful.” said the minister.
