Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has removed the state and deputy minister posts under a ‘caretaker’ government, a spokesperson of the disputed cabinet said.

“This is a caretaker government. Therefore, the President has said there will be no state and deputy ministers,” parliamentarian Mahinda Samarasinghe said.

He was responding to a question on why Keheliya Rambukwella, who was appointed as a disputed state minister and co-cabinet spokesperson was not present at the cabinet media briefing.

“Now there are only cabinet ministers,” Samarasinghe said.

A caretaker government was formed after the President gazetted a dissolution of parliament.

However, the move is now contested in the supreme court.
