The Joint Opposition (JO) yesterday called for adequate security for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who would attend election rallies in the run-up to the local government polls.

Making a special statement, JO leader Dinesh Gunawardena said:

The Joint Opposition is planning to hold political rallies countrywide in the coming weeks. The fifth president of this country Mahinda Rajapaksa would attend all those rallies. The number of personnel attached to his security contingent is not enough. There should be more personnel to guard the buffer zone immediately opposite the stages to ensure the former President’s protection. I would like to know from the government and the Prime Minister whether they can provide enough vehicles, personnel and facilities needed for the former President.”
