Amidst contradictory statements emanating from the government, Co-Cabinet Spokesman and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said yesterday that no one connected to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria ( ISIS) had come to Sri Lanka in the guise of teachers.
He told a news conference in Colombo that according to the security authorities lecturers from abroad were engaged in teaching Arabic and had no connections with ISIS.
The Muslims of Sri Lanka were law abiding and patriotic in keeping with the teachings of Islam, Senartane said, adding that the majority of Muslims were liberal minded and moderate.
He also denied Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe’s claim that 32 Sri Lankan Muslims had joined the ISIS.
“Foreigners are propagating extremism among Muslim children here. Extremist foreigners have entered Sri Lanka under the guise of teachers,” Rajapakshe recently told Parliament.
