Man Killed and Another Critically Injured as Gunman Fires T-56 on People at a Bus stand near the Bebilagolla Mosque in Ankumbura,Kandy.

A man died and another was injured when unidentified gunmen in a car opened fire near the Bebilagolla Mosque in Ankumbura, Kandy. The incident occurred around 8.30 a.m. yesterday.

The duo were shot at a nearby bus stand. The injured man admitted to the Kandy Hospital Intensive Care Unit is said to be in a critical condition.

According to sources, several people had arrived in the car and one of them who got out had opened fire with a T-56 rifle.

The gunmen had fled after the attack. Police arrested two suspects within two hours with the help of villagers.

Police arrested one suspect who was fleeing the scene after exiting from the vehicle a little while later. Police had given chase to the fleeing vehicle which had collided with a backhoe truck at a byroad near Antharagama. Police arrested another suspect who was in the car. The vehicle driver had escaped.

The deceased was Mohammed Rafeek, 23, and the 22-year-old who was injured worked at a mobile phone shop in Kandy town.

Police said the vehicle used by the gunmen belonged to a person in Wattala. The suspects are said to be residents of Mahaiyyawa and Kaduwela. Police investigations are continuing.
