Police have fired tear gas at fishermen congregating at the Galkanda crossing on the Negombo-Puttalam railroad.
The fishermen have been protesting there since morning.
They allege that dredging and sand mining from the seas around the areas of Negombo, Doowa, Palagadura and Palliyawatte is damaging their livelihoods.
The fishermen say vast amounts of sand is being transported to be used at the Colombo port city.
They had also protested at the Negombo Townhall, before being dispersed by Police.
