The proposal by D.M. Swaminathan, Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs, to accept the national policy on durable solutions for conflict-affected displacement, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The policy was prepared with the consultation of ministries, national, provincial and district level stakeholders, UN agencies, Civil Society organisations, and displaced communities.
The government said the policy demonstrates its commitment to rebuilding the lives of displaced families, with a rights-based approach. It affirmed that a durable solution goes beyond resettlement and includes the provision of protection, housing, water, sanitation and healthcare, primary education, a good living standard, access to livelihood etc.
It also said that the policy would be implemented without any discrimination on gender, ethnicity, age, language, political opinion, religion, caste, living places etc.
