Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday asked new Secretary to the Ministry of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Nimal Bopage to refrain making political statements.
PM Wickremesinghe summoned Bopage to Temple Trees yesterday morning and questioned him on the latter’s recent press statement urging the media not to use the term ‘Joint Opposition’.
The PM said that the government had not even considered such a move. Minister of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Gayantha Karunathilake and his deputy Karu Paranavithana were present at the meeting.
The Prime Minister instructed Bopage to consult his minister and deputy minister with regard to his work in the future and refrain from issuing communiqués without their approval.
The Prime Minister said that he would discuss the matter with President Maithripala Sirisena later in the day.
Last evening sources confirmed that the Premier had discussed the matter with President Sirisena.
