Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya yesterday acquitted Dr Shirani Bandaranayake, the retired Chief Justice, of all the charges of corruption, filed by the Permanent Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

Dr Bandaranayake was charged with non-declaration of assets and liabilities in the years 2010, 2011, 2012. The defence took up the objection that the allegations were baseless and unfounded. They challenged the commission to establish their cause of action or withdraw the complaint, altogether.

The Commission consequently withdrew its complaint.

President’s Counsel Nalin Laduwahetty appeared with Counsel Gunaratne Wanninayake for the defendant Dr. Bandaranayake.
