Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday told Parliament that there was a Brahmin class within the media and that class was becoming vasalas (outcasts).
“The Brahmin class in the media was created by a Maha Brahma who is non-existant now. The so-called Brahmin class has become a vasala class. That Brahmin class used to dine and wine with the Maha Brahma. We have no use of that Brahmin class,” the Prime Minister said, making a ministerial statement.
“The so-called Brahmin class used to go hunting with the Maha Brahma. There are some journalists who actually fought for freedom of media. We are with them. It is those who engaged in their profession while others went on hunting with the Maha Brahma.
“Today The Island newspaper has come down so low that it gives prominence to MP Sisira Jayakody. The Island has reported MP Jayakody saying that I threatened media. I did not threaten media yesterday. I was only presenting facts I received from media itself. In that process,
I named several journalists. Why cannot I name journalists? If the newspapers could name us, why can’t we do so?
“After my speech yesterday several MPs have said that I issued threats. I did not do so. I only indicated who actually were behind certain issues. I mentioned the names to describe who actually create those issues.
“MP Jayakody is a friend of mine but by highlighting what he said, The Island shows the level that the paper has come down to today,” the Prime Minister said.
