Two Ex-Soldiers Among Eight Suspects Arrested Over Killing of Karate Champion cum Nightclub Owner Wasantha Soysa in Anuradhapura

Eight suspects including two former Army soldiers were apprehended and questioned by the Police yesterday (26) regarding the murder of the night club owner in Anuradhapura on Saturday (24) night.

Speaking to Ceylon Today, the Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said, while eight suspects have been arrested and questioned by the Police yesterday (26) over 15 other suspects will also be arrested later on.

According to the Police, the preliminary investigations into the murder have disclosed that a personal dispute between the suspects and the nightclub owner had led to the incident. Furthermore, a vehicle and four blood stained wooden poles were also found based on information received by the arrested suspects. The ASP added that the suspects were residents of Dahaiyyagama, Masmaduwa, Vijayapura and Palamkulam.
An unidentified group stormed the nightclub down Muditha Street in Anuradhapura and stabbed the owner Wasantha Soysa to death and injured three others during the attack.

According to the Police, a group of about 20, with their faces masked, had entered the nightclub around 11:45 on Saturday night. Three workers at the nightclub had to be admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital, following the attack.

The victim, Wasantha Soysa, aged 57 – a Karate champion holding a Guinness World record of breaking 12 slabs of concrete in a go – was a resident of Muditha Street. The Anuradhapura Police added that the assailants had damaged property too.

Meanwhile, the Anuradhapura Police have launched detailed investigations into the incident.
