Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday requested the Opposition members not to engage in ‘civet’ politics (Ugudu Deshapalanaya) at night.
Participating in the adjournment debate on Geneva based UNHRC report and alleged human rights violations during the last phase of the war, the Prime Minister said: “Don’t play dubious games. I request you to give up ‘civet politics’. The civet could act well in dark places but cannot play the same when there is light.”
He called upon the opposition to give up civet politics and join hands with the government to create a democratic society and to fulfil the aspirations of the people.
“Who is opposing a domestic mechanism to find out the truth about the war? It is the LTTE sympathetic organisations in Tamil Diaspora, extremist Tamil groups in Tamil Nadu andSri Lanka, and those who call themselves patriots in Colombo and south of the country.
Their objective is same despite the places they live in. Their aim is to divide this society again on racial lines. The government does not mind the unity. As long as they do not try to make use of racism to grab power. People have rejected them twice on Jan. 08 and Aug. 17.
“Today, they shed crocodile tears for the army. How they treated the army when they were in power? They incarcerated Sarath Fonseka who led the army to war victory. He was an MP then. We saw how he was dragged out. I saw how they came to capture Sarath Fonseka staying at the Cinnamon Lake. The security personnel legally assigned to Fonseka were rounded up and ordered to line on their knees along the Chittampalam A. Gardiner Mawatha. That is how the army was treated then.”
