Senior United National Party Leader and National List MP Karunananda Jayasuriya has been elected unanmously as Speaker of Parliament. The name of “Karu” as he is popularly known was proposed by Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and seconded by Nimal Siripala de Silva.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) national list MP Thilanga Sumathipala was elected unopposed as deputy speaker.

Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) Leader Amirtharaj Adaikkalanathan alias “Selvam” who was elected to Parliament from Wanni district on the Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) party ticket is the new deputy chairman of committees.The TELO is a constituenr of the Tamil National Alliance(TNA) which contested elections under the ITAK symbol of House.
