President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that after the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution on April 20 the parliament would be dissolved to pave the way for a fresh general election.

The President was addressing an event at Pulasthipura, Polonnaruwa.

President Sirisena said: “The 19th Amendment will be brought to Parliament on April 20 and Parliament will be dissolved once it is passed. I have to fulfil the promises made to the people regarding the curtailing of executive powers vested with the President.”

The President said that an agreement had been reached among political parties regarding the presentation of the 19 Amendment on April 20.
