Shashi Weerawansa, wife of former UPFA Minister and National Freedom Front Leader Wimal Weerawansa was taken into custody by the CID at the Neville Fernando Hopsital, Malabe yesterday evening.

The Police Media Unit said last night that she would be referred to a Judicial Medical Officer in Colombo prior to being produced before a Magistrate.

Shashi was under investigation in connection with a charge that she had submitted forged documents to the Controller of Immigration and Emigration when she applied for a diplomatic passport.

When the CID visited her home on Thursday February 19, she was not there.

Wimal Weerawansa said that she could not meet the CID officers as she was receiving treatment in hospital.

Weerawansa at a political rally last week in Nugegoda challenged the police to take his wife into custody.

NFF spokesman Mohammed Musammil said last night the arrest of Weerawansa’s wife was part of the on-going witch-hunt against those who had stood by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
