An uproar from the Opposition drowned government voices when Housing and Samurdhi Minister Sajith Premadasa told the House that those who shouted “Sirisena kotiya” (Sirisena is a Tiger) were now saying “Sirisena saranam gachchami” (I go to Sirisena for refuge).

All Opposition MPs except the TNA and JVP attended sittings wearing a black arm band as a sign of protest against the removal of Mohan Peiris from the post of Chief Justice. They did not permit Minister Premadasa to deliver his speech shouting at government and saying that the majority of parliamentarians were in the opposition. They chanted bahutharaya ape (We are the majority) disrupting the proceedings.

As the situation could not be brought under control, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody decided to suspend the sittings for ten minutes.
