UPFA constituent National Freedom Front (NFF) led by former Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday accused new President Maithripala Sirisena of already having taken a step to remove the governor of the Northern Province Maj. Gen. (Retd) G. A. Chandrasiri to fulfil the promises he had given to the pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA).
Addressing a media conference at the party head office, NFF Spokesman and former Parliamentarian Mohammed Muzammil said that according to their sources the new President had already asked the governor to resign and was scheduled to be appoint a former secretary of a ministry as the Northern governor.
He said since the then President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed retired former senior military officer G. A. Chandrasiri as the Governor of the Northern Province, the Tiger proxy TNA had been demanding his ouster.
Removing G. A. Chandrasiri from the post of Northern Province Governor was one of the key points of the TNA campaign for the Northern Provincial Council election in August 2013, Muzzammil said, adding that the TNA members and its Chief Minister elect C. V. Wigneswaran had refused to take oaths before the governor after winning the election.
“Now it was clear that new President Sirisena will fulfil one of his promises given to the TNA as the first step of his government,” he said.
