The Presidents office said that yesterday’s “peaceful” Presidential Election indicated that it had not interfered in the conduct of the poll.
Presidential Spokesman Mohan Samaranayake told “The Island” shortly after the counting process had begun that polling had been “very peaceful and incident free”, which indicated the governments commitment to safeguard democracy.
Pointing out that there had been an enthusiastic response from the people with over 70 percent of the electorate having voted, he said it was because they knew that the outcome was crucial to the country’s unity and territorial integrity and reconciliation process.
Samaranayake refuted allegations by the National Democratic Front that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had attempted to subvert the democratic process by using the military and state machinery as “baseless. How can they say such a thing?, it was a peaceful election.”
