Common candidate Maithripala Sirisena is suing former General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP) and present Minister of Health, Tissa Attanayake for defamation .demanding a sum of Rs 2.5 billion as compensation.

Attanayake previously produced a document which he stated was an agreement between Sirisena and Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, which included content about the implementation of the 13th Amendment including the devolution of police and land powers, the reduction of 50% of military presence in the North and complying with the United Nations Human Rights Council recommendations.

The New Democratic Front yesterday (25) also called upon the Inspector General of Police to arrest Attanayake and record a statement from him.

Sirisena and Wickremesinghe have denied that they signed the said document.

Former Chief Justice Sarath Nanda Silva and President’s Counsel Srinath Perera noted that individuals who use fraudulent documents were in violation of Article 452 and 459 of the Penal Code and the media organizations that published the document’s content without corroborating facts are in violation of Article 83 of the Presidential Elections Act.

Leader of the National Council for a Clean Tomorrow, Jathika Hela Urumaya MP Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thera added that the resignation of the Wanduramba Police OIC signified the fact that the government had not allowed law enforcement authorities independence to conduct their duties.
