Hirunika Premanchandra and her mother, a former advisor to the President, Sumana Premachandra have fled the country following threats to their lives, a coordinating secretary of Premanchandra said.

The security of Hirunika Premanchandra had been withdrawn after she declared that she will back the common opposition presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena.

In addition, her mother’s position as Presidential advisor had also been cancelled.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader just before she went into hiding, Hirunika had said that there was an attempt to take over her house in the Ministerial Housing Scheme at Jawatha where she and her mother reside.

“However, with my decision to back the common candidate, my mother and I will face any threat coming from the government at present or in the future,” she stressed.

It is reported that Hirunika and her mother have moved to England for safety.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Kotikawatte Pradeshiya Sabaha Prasanna Solangaarachchi had last week claimed that there was an attempt to arrest him.

He further revealed that on Friday (12) that some western provincial council ministers were attempting to remove him from the chairmanship of Kottikawattha Pradeshiya Sabha and that he is ready to step down at any time.
