Anticipated crossovers failed to materialise at common candidate Maithripala Sirisena’s first official campaign rally in Kandy yesterday, but the Opposition is promising more defections in the week ahead.

Four vacant seats were left for would-be crossovers from the Government at the rally and garlands were ready to welcome them into the Opposition fold.

Among big names in play yesterday were UPFA MPs Jeevan Kumaratunga and Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. However, the rally in Kandy, which was attended by large crowds, ended without incident.

Shortly before attending his maiden rally in the hill capital of Kandy, Sirisena paid homage at the Sacred Temple of the Tooth to evoke blessings.

The Opposition candidate also met with the Malwatte Mahanayake for discussions before the rally.
Sirisena was accompanied by UNP National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, JHU MP Champika Ranawaka, UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella and others as he paid a visit to the Chief Prelate.

Sirisena’s attire at the Kandy rally was remarked upon, when he arrived at the venue clad in a national suit and a beige long waistcoat, Narendra-Modi style. Sources said the bulky vest was hiding a bullet proof jacket to protect the candidate.

Democratic Party Leader Sarath Fonseka, UNP Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya, UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, UNP Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake, Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero, JHU MP Athuraliye Rathana Thero, former Minister Navin Dissanayake, former UPFA Deputy Minister M.K.A.D.S. Gunewardane, former Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne and others participated in the Kandy rally.
