Sri Lanka’s former High Commissioner to London, Dr. Chris Nonis, “gate-crashed” the private dinner party, to which he was not invited, Government spokesman and Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told the weekly news conference yesterday.
Rambukwella said that though Dr. Nonis went uninvited, he was welcomed. The Minister said that the media also blew the incident out of proportion as the incident took place at a private dinner party.
He said that the government would not have condoned the incident if it happened at an official function.
He also denied that Dr. Nonis was pressured to resign by the government after the incidents, which also included a complaint from External Affairs Ministry Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne that Dr. Nonis had abused her in four letter expletives!!
Later, the Minister, speaking in a private capacity, said that it was quite normal and frequent for Sri Lankans to get involved in this type of abuse and brawl which happens quite often here, but the individuals were expected to behave when they represented the country overseas, because, it is the country’s image which suffers at the end when inappropriate behaviour happens.
