Tamil will be a compulsory language for all schools in Tamil Nadu from the next academic year. A recent Government notification has brought schools in the State affiliated to all Boards under the purview of the Tamil Learning Act, 2006.
This, however, does not include Central government schools such as Kendriya Vidyalayas and Sainik schools.
From 2006-07, State Board, Matriculation and Anglo-Indian schools had to teach Tamil as a compulsory subject from class I in a phased manner gradually up to class X. As per this, in 2015-16, all students would have to write a Tamil paper in the class X board examinations.
The Association of Matriculation Higher Secondary Schools and their management in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have gone to court against a letter by the Directorate of Matriculation schools seeking to implement the Act. The matter is pending before the court.
