The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will meet this week to discuss the re-appointment of former military-man, G.A. Chandrasiri, as the Governor of the Northern Province and work out the Party’s response. TNA Parliamentarian, Suresh Premachandran, said the Party will take a decision on the reappointment after the meeting.

TNA sources however, hinted at the likelihood of Chief Minister of Northern Province, C. V. Wigneswaran, resigning from his position after the discussion, in protest against the re-appointment.

Meanwhile, the Democratic People’s Front (DPL) criticized the government action and said it has shown insensitivity to the needs of the Northern people by re-appointing Chandrasiri as the Governor of the Northern Province.

“The government has once again shown inflexibility by extending the term of Chandrasiri,” DPL, leader, Mano Ganeshan told Ceylon Today, pointing out that the Northern Provincial Councillors and the people have been protesting the appointment of the former military officer as the Governor. “This shows the inflexibility of the government,” he said.

Ganeshan said the Northerners are not against Chandrasiri because he is Sinhalese, they are against him because he is an Army officer and because of his militaristic approach to administrating the Province. “The government could have appointed a civil administrator and given a positive signal to the people of the Northern Province,” he pointed out.

The New Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) accused the government of being ‘deaf and blind’ to the demands of the Tamil people. “This is callous disregard of their sentiments,” NSSP, Leader, Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne said, charging that though the government was talking about reconciliation it was not interested in solving the problems of the Northern people. “This is a fascist government,” he said.

However, National Freedom Front (NFF), a constituent party of the government, hailed the President’s decision claiming that Chandrasiri had done a lot to assure the security and safety of the people of the North.
