The police arrested 44 persons, in connection with the clashes that took place in Aluthgama on Sunday. Of those arrested, 25 have been remanded.
SSP Ajith Rohana told Ceylon Today, the Colombo Crime Division had deployed three police teams to arrest another 55 persons who were involved on Sunday’s mayhem.
It is reported that, 39 of arrested are from the Aluthgama area while other two are from Beruwala and Matugama.
forty people injured during the clashes are receiving treatment at Kalutara, Aluthgama and National Hospital,Colombo.
Meanwhile, Army peace keeping teams were dispatched to several divisions including Dharga Town and Aluthgama yesterday to restore stability.
Army Commander, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, said the Army teams were dispatched in compliance with the request made by the police on Monday evening.
Accordingly, Army peace keeping teams have been dispatched to Aluthgama, Dharga Town, Bogaswatte and Welipenne.
Army spokesman, Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said Army teams have also been sent to assist the police in the clearance of road blocks along the Galle road in Aluthgama.
The police curfew, that was in force in Aluthgama, Dharga Town and other divisions, where tensions prevailed, was withdrawn temporarily from 8.00 in the morning until 12.00 noon yesterday. The curfew was re-imposed from 12.00 noon, SSP Ajith Rohana said.
