Sri Lankan Embassy Employee Ronaviru Killed and Second Secretary Ratnayake Injured in Russia in a Dispute with a Transport Company


The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that an employee of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Russia has died on the night of June 11 in Rostov-on-Don during a dispute with employees of a transport company engaged in transporting the baggage of a Sri Lankan delegation, which had arrived in this city, according to a statement posted on the Ministry website.

“In the course of the conflict, the driver of a lorry ran over an administrative-technical employee of the Embassy, Ronaviru, who died at the scene of the accident. Second Secretary of the Sri Lankan diplomatic mission, Ratnayake, received a traumatic injury of the chest,” the report says.

It is noted that currently, one of the suspects is detained. The investigation continues. The Russian Foreign Ministry expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased citizen of Sri Lanka. The delegation from Sri Lanka came to Rostov-on-Don in the framework of the “Days of Sri Lanka in Russia” programme. The delegation was planning to stay at one of the hotels in the centre of Rostov-on-Don.
