Mawanella town in the Kegalle district of Sabaragamuwa province in Sri Lanka was the latest venue of the on going anti -Muslim campaign conducted by the island nation’s foremost ethno-religious fascist organization known as the Bodhu Bala Sena(BBS).

The Bodhu Bala Sena staged a mass meeting on Sunday March 23rd at Mawanella situated on the Colombo -Kandy road between Kegalle and Kadugannawa.

Several frontline leaders of the Bodhu Bala Sena addressed the meeting and unleashed a barrage of anti-Muslim rhetoric at the gathering.

Mawanella which witnessed Sinhala – muslim violence over a decade ago has a sizable Muslim population living amidst their Sinhala Buddhist brothers and sisters.Several business establishments in the town are owned and run by Muslims

The Bodhu Bala Sena speakers who accused the Muslims of controlling Mawanella town proclaimed that such a state of affairs would not be tolerated in the future.

The platform orators, many of whom werre Buddhist bhikkus warned the Muslims of dire consequences in the future and declared that the BBS would usher in a transformation.

The Bodhu Bala Sena proclaimed that a prominent street in Mawanella bearing a Muslim name would be changed immediately to reflect the Sinhala Buddhist ethos of the country.

Thereafter the Bodhu Bala Sena Bhikku leaders led a procession that marched along the street known as Hassan Mawatte and spouted racist anti-muslim venom through megaphones. Hassan mawatte is preponderantly Muslim with several Muslim owned businesses.

The Bodhu Bala Sena mob then tried to deface the letters on street sign saying Hassan Mawatte. The BBS pasted stickers on top of the earlier lettering saying “Anagarika Dharmapala mawatte”.

A large contingent of Policemen deployed at Mawanella simply watched what was happening instead of trying to prevent breaches of peace and transgressions of law by the BBS.

Having changed the name of Hassan mawatte to Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatte in a matter of minutes through “mob force” the ethno religious fascist Bodhu Bala Sena left the scene threatening to return soon to Mawanella and continue their campaign.

The BBS was safely escorted out of town by the Police also known as guardians of law and order.
