Day long Screening of Ten Films by Leena Manimekalai at Jeevana Jyothi in Egmore on August 10th

Ten documentary films by Leena Manimekalai will be screened on Saturday August 10th at Jeevana Jyothi Auditorium opposite Connemara Library at Egmore, Chennai.

The films will be shown one by one from 11. am till 8.00 pm. The filmmaker Leena will be present and will participate in the discussions at the end. The screening is free of charge and open to all.

1) My mirror is the door – பெண்ணாடி – 52 mins: [11am to 11:55am]

Video poem on Tamil women poets of the Sangam Era.

2) Ballad of Resistance – 42 mins: [11:55am to 12:40pm]

Ballad of Resistance is a video portrait of indigenous tribal journalist and activist Dayamani Barla, her perseverance and tireless fight against corporations and the state machinery.

3) Goddesses – தேவதைகள் – 42 mins: [12:45pm to 1:30pm]

Story of three ordinary women who live extra ordinary lives surviving darkest of times and gone against society’s norms to live and work according to the rules they have set for themselves.

LUNCH – 1:30pm to 2:00pm

4) A hole in the bucket – 35 mins: [2:00pm to 2:35pm]

Factual story of thirst and sanitation from Chennai, the urban south of India.

5) Altar – பலிபீடம் – 53 mins: [2:35pm to 3:25pm]
Documentary on customs and traditions of Kambalathu Naicker community hailing in central parts of Tamilnadu. The films analyses child marriages and how women and children become victims of religious beliefs and practices.

6) Waves After Waves – அலைகளை கடந்து – 68 mins: [3:30pm to 4:40pm]

Docu-feature exploring how art forms magically rejuvenate the lives of children, disrupted by the major natural disaster Tsunami 2004. Music, Theatre, Stories, Art works and Painting workshops, slowly but immensely provides the required psychosocial care for the affected children.

7) Connecting Lines – 28 mins: [4:45pm to 5:15pm]
Documentary on student politics in Germany and India. It weaves through the student lives of four protagonists, two each in India and Germany. Their background, indulgences, activism and struggles pragmatically reveal the conflict and indeed the hope for resolution.

8)Parai – பறை – 46 mins: [5:15pm to 6:05pm]
Documentary, revealing the status of Dalit population, particularly women in India with the south Indian village Siruthondamadevi, Kadalur District as a classic example.

9) Break the shackles – 48 mins: [6:10pm to 7:00pm]
Documentary focusing on how the three track policy of globalization, privatization and liberalization without the interest of social justice in a highly unequal structure of country like India becomes more discriminating to dalits, the downtrodden.

10) Mathamma – மாத்தம்மா – 17 mins: [7:00pm to 7:20pm]

Documentary capturing a peculiar practice of devoting girl children to the deity of the folks of Arundhati community, Mangattucheri village near Arokonam,

சென்னை எக்மோரில் உள்ள ஜீவன ஜோதி அரங்கில் சனிக்கிழமை (10-08-2013) காலை 11 மணி முதல் இரவு 8 மணிவரை லீனாவின் படங்கள் திரையிடப்பட உள்ளது. இந்த அரங்கம், கன்னிமாரா நூலகம் எதிரில் உள்ளது. இந்த திரையிடலில் லீனா மணிமேகலை கலந்துக் கொள்கிறார்.
