Hirunika Premachandra, the daughter of the late parliamentarian Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra has decided to enter politics and contest the next elections under the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
Premachandra told The Sunday Leader that she will remain a member of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya (Sri Lanka People’s Party) while supporting the UPFA. She said that during a recent event she had met some government Ministers and parliamentarians who had urged her to enter politics.
Premachandra however insisted she would still campaign for justice over the death of her father and will not rest till the perpetrators are put behind bars.
She also said that her father’s sister who is in Canada has decided to take the case regarding the murder of the late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra to the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva later next month if the government fails to arrest those responsible for the murder.
Former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra was killed in a shooting incident also involving MP Duminda Silva in Mulleriyawa in October 2011.
Two others were also killed and MP Silva had been admitted to the intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Sri Jayawardenapura hospital.
