{"id":85995,"date":"2025-06-10T00:36:59","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T04:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=85995"},"modified":"2025-06-10T01:43:48","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T05:43:48","slug":"85995","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=85995","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka and China sign two Memorandae of Understanding to set up a working group on trade facilitation, and on industrial and supply chain cooperation, says   the Chinese Embassy in Colombo meeting was jointly chaired by China\u2019s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Sri Lankan Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nby<\/p>\n<p>Meera Srinivasan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka and China have signed two Memorandae of Understanding to set up a working group on trade facilitation, and on industrial and supply chain cooperation,   the Chinese Embassy in Colombo  said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina and Sri Lanka have taken steps to deepen economic and trade cooperation, signing key agreements and exploring additional investment opportunities during the eighth meeting of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Trade and Economic Commission held on May 29th in Colombo,\u201d the Embassy said on social media platform \u2018X\u2019 on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was jointly chaired by China\u2019s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Sri Lankan Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe. \u201cBoth sides exchanged in-depth views on advancing high-quality Belt and Road Initiative cooperation, expanding trade and investment, and safeguarding the multilateral trading system,\u201d the Chinese Embassy\u2019s post said.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Minister Wang also met President Dissanayake during his visit.<\/p>\n<p>According a statement issued by the President\u2019s office, Minister Wang noted that considering \u201cthe current political and economic stability in Sri Lanka, along with the clear policy direction\u201d of the Dissanayake administration, \u201cthere has been a notable rise in interest from Chinese investors looking to invest in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe discussed enhancing our trade relations and expediting development projects in Sri Lanka. Exciting times ahead with increased interest from Chinese investors,\u201d Mr. Dissanayake said on social platform \u2018X\u2019 following the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The bilateral initiatives take off from deliberations held during President Anura Kumara Dissanayake\u2019s visit to China in January this year, soon after he visited India in December 2024, making New Delhi his first stop abroad after assuming office in September 2024.<\/p>\n<p>A joint statement issued on Mr. Dissanayake\u2019s China visit said the two sides agreed to work on the \u201cearly conclusion of a comprehensive free trade agreement.\u201d Speaking at an investors\u2019 forum in Colombo during his visit Mr. Wang, according to local publication Economynext, said: \u201cIt is hoped that the two sides continue to work toward the conclusion of a comprehensive free trade agreement in one package, in line with the principles of equality, mutual benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi and Beijing are keen to cultivate close ties with the leftist Sri Lankan leader, who has repeatedly emphasised a non-aligned foreign policy that would prioritise Sri Lanka\u2019s interests. India and sections within Sri Lanka have been highlighting the need to resume bilateral talks on Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) \u2014 stalled at different points \u2014 especially in the context of U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to slap tariffs on trade partners.
