{"id":83968,"date":"2024-05-02T00:54:36","date_gmt":"2024-05-02T04:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=83968"},"modified":"2024-05-02T16:29:53","modified_gmt":"2024-05-02T20:29:53","slug":"president-ranil-wickremesinghe-announces-700-rupee-pay-increase-to-plantation-workers-at-ceylon-workers-congress-may-day-rally-at-kotagala-current-daily-wage-rs-1000-goes-up-to-1700-rupees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=83968","title":{"rendered":"President  Ranil Wickremesinghe Announces 700 Rupee  Pay Increase  to Plantation Workers at Ceylon Workers Congress May Day Rally at Kotagala; Current Daily Wage  Rs 1000 Goes up to  1700 Rupees."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nBy<br \/>\nMeera  Srinivasan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With a presidential election expected later this year,the May Day rallies o fall main political parties in Sri Lanka seemed a prelude to their poll campaigns.  <\/p>\n<p>Leaders of various political camps made a direct pitch to the people in their respective public events, seeking their support in what would be the first election since the island nation\u2019s debilitating economic crisis in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>A year into the International Monetary Fund\u2019s programme, that brought with it tough austerity measures, many Sri Lankans are reeling under the impact of steep tax hikes, and higher fuel and energy prices, amid high living costs.<\/p>\n<p>President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who participated at the May Day event of the Ceylon Workers\u2019 Congress in Kotagala in the Central Province, where many Malaiyaha Tamils, including estate workers reside and work, announced a hike in the daily wage of plantation sector workers, to LKR 1700 (roughly \u20b9 477). <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Underscoring his government\u2019s \u201cdiligent efforts\u201d to stabilise the country\u2019s economy, he further pledged to convert workers\u2019 colonial-era line room accommodation to \u201cvillages\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking later at a Colombo rally organised by his United National Party (UNP), Mr. Wickremesinghe said his government took \u201cdifficult decisions\u201d for economic recovery while challenging the main Opposition party Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB or United People\u2019s Force) and the centre-left Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP or People\u2019s Liberation Front) on what their response had been.  <\/p>\n<p>Addressing the SJB\u2019s May Day rally in Colombo, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa, pledged to implement the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution, which promises a measure of power devolution to the provinces. <\/p>\n<p>Further, he proposed a \u201cnational wealth fund\u201d to ensure prosperity of future generations. \u201cA government led by us would establish such a fund with the goal of ensuring a more stable economy,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe JVP-led National People\u2019s Power coalition put up a big show in capital Colombo, with scores of members and supporters marching across the city, chanting \u201cwe want a government\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Policemen were stationed in buildings and apartments en route their march, apparently in anticipation of the huge crowd.
