Despite reports to the effect that incumbent President and United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Founder and former Minister Basil Rajapaksa recently discussed an alliance between the SLPP and the UNP in a forthcoming Parliamentary election, UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara stated that he was unaware of any such discussion between the President and Rajapaksa.<\/p>\n

There are reports that Wickremesinghe and Rajapaksa had, via phone call, recently discussed a possible alliance between the SLPP and the UNP in a future Parliamentary election. <\/p>\n

It is reported that during the discussion, they had agreed to not give nominations to any of their party members who criticise the party and its leadership and subsequently seek nominations from the other party. <\/p>\n

It was also reported that Wickremesinghe and Rajapaksa had agreed that nominations should be given only in accordance with the quota that each party would be given in such an election.<\/p>\n

However, when contacted by The Morning to inquire about the matter, UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said that he was unaware of any such discussion between the President and Rajapaksa. He also said that any discussion regarding forthcoming elections or possible alliances with other parties has not taken place at the party level so far.<\/p>\n

The SLPP, which criticised the UNP-led Government from 2015 to 2019, nominated former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the party\u2019s candidate for the 2019 Presidential Election. After his victory, the SLPP secured an overwhelming victory in the 2020 Parliamentary election, where the UNP suffered a historic defeat with none of its candidates including Wickremesinghe, being able to enter Parliament. <\/p>\n

Wickremesinghe, who then entered Parliament through the party\u2019s sole National List seat, functioned as an Opposition MP. However, in mid-2022, Wickremesinghe was appointed as the Prime Minister in the face of massive protests against then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the SLPP-led Government. Wickremesinghe was thereafter elected President with the majority support of the SLPP in a Parliamentary vote held after the resignation of Rajapaksa from the Presidency in July 2022.<\/p>\n
