\nSamagi Jana Balawegeya (SJB) and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has alleged that former Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal has \u201ccriminal liability\u201d while Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People\u2019s Power (NPP) Leader and Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said that Cabraal cannot be made free of all wrongdoing merely because he has resigned.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Replying to Cabraal\u2019s announcement on Twitter of his resignation yesterday (4), Premadasa claimed that Cabraal has criminal liability for his actions in the period between 2006 and 2015 as well as over the past two years, where he served as a State Minister and the CBSL Governor.<\/p>\n

\u201cLacking in competency & accountability you have led Sri Lanka to its current meltdown. You are accountable not just for the last 2 years but what you did between 2006-2015. @an_cabraal YOU HAVE CRIMINAL LIABILITY. #StopTheDenial (sic),\u201d the Twitter reply read.<\/p>\n

Cabraal\u2019s original Tweet yesterday said that \u201cin the context of all Cabinet Ministers resigning, I have today (4) submitted my resignation as the Governor of the CBSL, to the President\u201d.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Anura Kumara Dissanayake questioned yesterday as to how Cabraal can resign and act as if he is free of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw that Cabraal has resigned. Does that mean that he is devoid of any wrongdoing? He had a primary responsibility to manage our economy. He is bound to do that. He made stupid decisions which helped his friends profit and led to this broken economy. He cannot just step down and go like he is free of all wrongdoing. Do we get answers just because they resign?\u201d questioned Dissanayake.<\/p>\n

Dissanayake accused Cabraal of causing a loss of over Rs. 80 billion in the controversial hedging deal in 2007 and of causing the loss of over Rs. 15 billion in the purchase of bonds prior to 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe deposited $ 52 million in Greece for the purchase of bonds but Sri Lanka did not even get a cent of that back to the country. He had paid $ 6.5 million to a Central Intelligence Agency official from the US to promote Sri Lanka. This official is now in jail and nothing positive happened to the country from this. That was all Cabraal\u2019s work,\u201d alleged Dissanayake.<\/p>\n

He also wasted billions of the Employees\u2019 Provident Fund (EPF) in the stock market, claimed Dissanayake.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe demand from the people is not just that they resign but that they also return the money that they stole from this country,\u201d said Dissanayake.<\/p>\n

A political crisis has arisen in the country as the people\u2019s demand for the resignation of current President Gotabaya Rajapaksa grows, in the midst of a deepening economic crisis, leaving the public in need of essential goods and services.<\/p>\n

On Sunday (3), the 11 constituent parties of the Governing Alliance, led by Government MPs Udaya Gammanpila, Wimal Weerawansa, and Vasudeva Nanayakkara, proposed that an all-party Interim Government be formed as a solution to the current political crisis gripping the country. Following the resignations of the Cabinet of Ministers on Sunday, four cabinet portfolios (Finance, Foreign, Education, and Highways) were appointed to maintain stability in the country until a full Cabinet is appointed. <\/p>\n

However, both the JVP and the Samagi Jana Balawegeya (SJB) refused such a solution, without the resignation of the President, as per the demand of the people.<\/p>\n
