The official website of the President of Sri Lanka was inaccessible for some time yesterday (3) due to heavy traffic, stated President\u2019s Media Division Director General and senior journalist Sudewa Hettiarachchi.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Morning, he said the website was down due to heavy traffic, and that the incident had been orchestrated by an individual or group. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation is under control and we have rectified the site now. However, the Air Force and Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) carried out an investigation into the matter,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Although Hettiarachchi said that they were yet to confirm the party or parties involved, the hacker group Anonymous India posted a Twitter message that read:
\n\u201c#TangoDown https:\/\/president.gov.lk President site of Sri Lanka down. #Anonymous will support the citizens of Sri Lanka (sic).\u201d, inferring that it was behind the incident.<\/p>\n

Anonymous is a decentralised international \u201chacktivist\u201d collective that has been known to get involved in such issues through various methods, such as by carrying out distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks to take down websites, or by releasing hidden or classified information to reveal corrupt practices. <\/p>\n

Members of the Sri Lankan community on Twitter had reached out to the collective under the hashtag #AnonymoushelpSriLanka, calling on it to expose illegal assets and transactions by politicians.<\/p>\n

The collective\u2019s central account had responded by sharing a cartoon with the caption \u201cPresident Rajapaksa invoked 36-hour curfew and state of emergency allowing the military to arrest and imprison suspects for long periods without trial, deployed soldiers armed with automatic assault rifles for \u2018crowd control\u2019 (sic).\u201d<\/p>\n

Some Sri Lankan citizens have used the #AnonymoushelpSriLanka hashtag to share long messages explaining the state of the country. Most of these alleged acts of corruption by politicians and urged for the collective\u2019s support to bring these to light.<\/p>\n
