Six Diaspora Tamil organizations active in the United States of America have joint letter to the newly designated US Ambassador to Colombo Julie Jiyoon Chung outlined a \u201cCommon Position\u201d regarding the \u201cexistential threat\u201d facing the Tamil people of Sri Lanka and submitted specific requests.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chief among the requests are a call for an internationally conducted and monitored Referendum for the people living in the north-eastern region of the island to find a democratic, peaceful, permanent, and political solution that meets Tamils’ aspirations and an interim International Protection Mechanism in the north-eastern region of the island. <\/p>\n

Among the signatories to the missive are the Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA) which is an umbrella organization of Tamil associations representing the Tamils of India and the Transnational Govt of Thamil Eeam(TGTE)<\/p>\n

Congratulations on your Appointment as US Ambassador to Sri Lank<\/strong>a <\/p>\n

Dear Ambassador Chung,<\/em><\/p>\n

Tamil diaspora organizations in the US collectively felicitate you on your appointment as Ambassador to Sri Lanka. With your extensive diplomatic experience in South East Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, you bring an unparalleled expertise to the onerous task with which you are entrusted in Sri Lanka. <\/p>\n

Madam Ambassador, you are well aware of the veritable existential threat the Tamil People are facing in the island. It is in view of these dire conditions confronting our people in the homeland, all the major Tamil diaspora organizations have arrived at a \u201cCommon Position\u201d as a basis to resolve the national conflict in the island of Sri Lanka. <\/p>\n

In that \u201cCommon Position\u201d, we have put forward the following urgent requests to the international community: <\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> An internationally conducted and monitored Referendum that allows people living in the north-eastern region of the island of Sri Lanka (Northern and Eastern province) prior to 1948 and their descendants to find a democratic, peaceful, permanent, and political solution that meets Tamils’ aspirations. <\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> An interim International Protection Mechanism in the north-eastern region of the island. <\/p>\n

3<\/strong>. The Repeal of the Sixth Amendment to the Sri Lankn Constitution.<\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> The referral of the situation in Sri Lanka to the International Criminal Court with respect to genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, and legal action against Sri Lanka before the International Court of Justice under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and the Convention against Torture. <\/p>\n

Dear Ambassador Chung, in your forthcoming diplomatic functions in Sri Lanka we trust you will take into consideration the above requests and endeavor to promote these urgent needs of the Tamil people in the island of Sri Lanka to the best of your ability. Thank you so much! <\/p>\n
