The Working Committee (WC) of the United National Party (UNP) has picked party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the UNP nominee for Parliament.<\/p>\n

At a meeting held today (Monday) the UNP Working Committee proposed that Wickremesinghe enter Parliament through its only National List seat. <\/p>\n

UNP sources told Daily Mirror that the party will now take a final decision on the matter.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile five new members were appointed to the UNP Working Committee today. They are Dinouk Colombage, Kithsiri Manchanayake, Saman Ratnapriya, Shafeek Rajabdeen and Ramaiah Yogarajan.<\/p>\n

The UNP suffered a humiliating loss at the last General Election and failed to secure a single seat in Parliament.<\/p>\n

However, the UNP managed to secure a National List seat based on the total votes it received at the polls in August last year.<\/p>\n

The UNP delayed its nomination for the seat and went ahead with a process of restructuring the party.<\/p>\n

UNP nod for Ranil\u2019s return to P\u2019ment<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Working Committee of the United National Party (UNP) yesterday appointed its Leader and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to the sole National List parliamentary seat the party secured during the last General Elections.<\/p>\n

The decision to send a UNP representative to Parliament using the National List seat comes after the position was left vacant for nearly a year and a half, with the party unable to decide on who should be appointed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision was unanimous,\u201d the UNP General Secretary, former Parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara told the Daily FT.<\/p>\n

Wickremesinghe has recently been pushing for reforms of the outdated public health legislature for a more effective response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as greater parliamentary oversight regarding the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill. <\/p>\n

A long-standing leadership struggle within the party triggered a vote for the Deputy Leader position following the landslide defeat suffered at the 2019 General Elections. <\/p>\n

The then party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Ruwan Wijewardena, Ravi Karunanayake, Vajira Abeygunawardena and Daya Gamage had indicated their interest in becoming the next leader of the UNP. <\/p>\n

However, former Defence State Minister Ruwan Wijewardena was voted in as the Deputy Leader of the party in September 2020.<\/p>\n
