We decided that we must accept the people\u2019s mandate and allow the President to form a government, although we have the majority in Parliament. <\/p>\n<p>I respect and cherish democracy. Therefore I decided to resign as Prime Minister. I will inform this decision officially on Thursady,&#8221; Wickremesinghe said.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>He added that he faced criticism as well as praise during his tenure as Prime Minister and that under his tenure human rights, democracy, freedom expression, equality and reconciliation blossomed in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the 19th amendment we depoliticized state institutions.
