The United National Party (UNP) has decided to institute disciplinary action against two of its MPs \u2013 Non-Cabinet Minister of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology Ajith Perera and Non-Cabinet Minister of Science, Technology and Research Sujeewa Senasinghe \u2013 for making certain remarks in breach of party discipline, the Daily Mirror learns.<\/p>\n

According to informed sources, the party noticed these two ministers to appear before General-Secretary of Education and Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam as well as Legal Secretary Nissanka Nanayakkara at 11.00 a.m. at the party headquarters in Sirikotha for preliminary inquiries.<\/p>\n

UNP sources said there were complaints against the duo for criticising the party, its leadership and policies.<\/p>\n

These two ministers are at the forefront of agitating for presidential candidacy to Housing and Construction Minister Sajith Premadasa. They addressed public rallies in recent times.<\/p>\n

However, Mr. Perera said he had not received any such notice. \u201cThis is yet another false information being spread,\u201d he said. Mr. Senasinghe could not be contacted for comments. <\/p>\n

UNP calls for show cause from Sujeewa, Ajith<\/strong><\/p>\n

The UNP today called for show cause from ministers Sujeewa Senasinghe and Ajith P. Perera before September 9, since they failed to appear for preliminary inquiries.<\/p>\n

The party earlier decided to institute disciplinary action against two ministers for making certain remarks in breach of party discipline.<\/p>\n

UNP Chairman Kabir Hashim said today he did not hold the view that State Ministers Ajith P. Perera and Sujeewa Senasinghe had done anything wrong for the party to conduct a disciplinary inquiry.<\/p>\n

He told journalists that calling for an explanation over a statement made by a member was not such a major issue. \u201cA disciplinary inquiry is nothing unusual. This matter would end after they provide an explanation,\u201d Mr. Hashim said.<\/p>\n

When asked whether a disciplinary inquiry was being initiated because the two-state ministers had urged the party leadership to name UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa as the party\u2019s presidential candidate, Mr Hashim said a disciplinary inquiry should also be conducted on others who claim to be the party\u2019s presidential candidates. <\/p>\n
