DECLARATION & PLEDGE BETWEEN FOCUS AND AUMSA<\/strong><\/p>\n

The series of bombings on Easter Sunday (21st April 2019) and subsequent events compel us to reflect deeply about how we as Sri Lankans must change the way we think, speak and act towards one another. In light of this, the Fellowship of Christian University Students (FOCUS) and the All University Muslim Student Association (AUMSA), which largely represents the Christian and Muslim students in the universities of Sri Lanka, would like to declare and pledge the following to one another:<\/p>\n

We declare that the people of Sri Lanka belong to different ethnic and cultural backgrounds,speaking different languages and adhering to different religious traditions. Christians and Muslims have a long history of engagement with each other globally and nationally.<\/p>\n

We reject the idea that this engagement can be reduced to a clash of civilizations or as inherently antagonistic towards one another. <\/p>\n

We acknowledge that we have often viewed each other with suspicion and disparaged the lifestyles and religious practices of the other.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We also declare that each of our religious traditions is comprehensive and unique, entailing clear differences in how we perceive God, humankind and the norms of governing human society.<\/p>\n

We reject the idea that religion can be reduced to a private belief or a set of common universal values.<\/p>\n

We acknowledge that we have often failed to listen to each other and have misrepresented the others\u2019 sacred texts.<\/p>\n


\nTherefore, as Christian and Muslim university students we pledge to:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 Explore and understand<\/strong> the complex relationship between Christians and Muslims throughout history and in different contexts.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Seek and offer<\/strong> forgiveness to each other for the times when that engagement has been violent or disrespectful of the other.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Work<\/strong> to the best of our ability to prevent the spread of ideologies that advocate hatred and harm towards other communities.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Engage<\/strong> in honest dialogue, discussion and debate with all people and worldviews as we collectively search for the truth about God and his world and our place in it.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Respect<\/strong> the right of each person in our country to their own belief and extend our hand of friendship to all people, especially to those who do not share our worldview.<\/p>\n
