\n Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday confirmed that President Maithripala Sirisena had in fact insinuated that an Indian spy agency was involved in plotting his assassination at a heated Cabinet meeting two weeks ago. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Details of the explosive Cabinet meeting made local and international headlines, but President Sirisena and members of the Government staunchly denied the claims, which Presidential aides said nearly caused an \u2018intra-State crisis\u2019.<\/p>\n

In an interview with NDTV\u2019s Sreenivasan Jain from Temple Trees yesterday, when asked about President Sirisena\u2019s alleged statement, Wickremesinghe said: \u201cThere was an insinuation. That\u2019s how many members of the Cabinet construed it \u2013 maybe he said it in the heat of the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wickremesinghe added that the Government of Sri Lanka says there was no involvement from India. \u201cThat\u2019s the position of Sri Lanka.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the explosive interview, the ousted Prime Minister, who maintains his position is legitimate, denied the involvement of a Cabinet Minister in the alleged plot to assassinate the President. \u201cWhen the allegation was made, I checked with the police, and the police said no revelations had been made about the involvement of a Cabinet Minister,\u201d he confirmed. Wickremesinghe added that the claims about the Cabinet Minister\u2019s involvement had been made subsequently by the complainant, who happened to have also worked at the Presidential Secretariat.<\/p>\n

Wickremesinghe told NDTV that the threat of assassination cited by President Sirisena as a reason for his sacking was just \u201can excuse\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe would have told me or the Cabinet if there was some evidence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As Sri Lanka\u2019s major constitutional deadlock, which some analysts have referred to as an illegal power grab, completes one week, Wickremesinghe said he refuses to leave his Official Residence, Temple Trees.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am the Prime Minister,\u201d Wickremesinghe told NDTV. \u201cAccording to the Constitution, the person who commands the confidence of Parliament is the Prime Minister.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSri Lanka, at the moment, has no Government. No one knows what the legal situation is,\u201d he added in the interview.<\/p>\n

The ousted Premier also told NDTV that his MPs were being offered vast sums of money to defect to the Sirisena-Rajapaksa camp. \u201cSometimes, the calls come in while they are in discussions with me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
