\nLawyers for former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake have communicated with the Presidential Commission on the Central Bank Bond Issues with regard to allegations made to it that a close relative of the former minister had made a phone call to the brother of Ms. Anika Wijesuriya on Oct. 14 threatening to cause her harm and\/or death compelling her to leave the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They have said their client had investigated the statement made by Additional Solicitor General Yasantha Kodagoda before the commission on this matter and found that Ms. Wijesuriya had come to Sri Lanka from overseas at 1.55 am on Oct. 5 and left the country the following day at 10.10 pm.They have said their client had read in the newspapers a stock exchange announcement that Mr. Nahil Wijesuriya had divested his shares of East West Properties PLC equally to his three children, one of whom was Ms. Anika Wijsuriya.<\/p>\n

“My client verily believes that she had so visited Sri Lanka for a day for the execution of the necessary documentation for the said transaction,” the lawyer has said.<\/p>\n

They claimed that Ms. Wijesuriya was not in the country on the date the alleged threats were made and reports that she was forced to flee the country on account of the threats “was a deliberately concocted fabrication to throw mud at my client and make detrimental aspersions on my client\u2026\u2026”<\/p>\n

There has been no indication on whether any police complaint of any threat had been made and if there was any investigation commenced thereon. However, action under the witness protection law has reportedly been initiated.<\/p>\n
