The first Dalit President was K.R.Narayanan, who as the 10th.President of India, served from 1997 to 2002.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kovind won the largely ceremonial position with more than 65 per cent of the vote by members of India\u2019s parliament and state assemblies, the election commission said.<\/p>\n<p>The 71-year-old former lawyer and Governor of the State of Bihar, belonging to the marginalized Dalit community, was nominated for the post  by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the candidate of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).<\/p>\n<p>The opposition Congress Party also put forward a Dalit candidate, a former parliamentary speaker Meira Kumar.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But Modi\u2019s BJP assembled enough electoral college votes to push through its candidate and the outcome was expected.<\/p>\n<p>Kovind is a longtime associate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or National Volunteer Corps, a Hindu group that has been accused of stoking religious hatred against Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongratulations to Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji on being elected the President of India!
