{"id":54008,"date":"2017-07-01T00:54:03","date_gmt":"2017-07-01T04:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=54008"},"modified":"2017-07-01T02:28:20","modified_gmt":"2017-07-01T06:28:20","slug":"indian-high-commissioner-taranjit-singh-sandhu-hands-over-16000-books-from-india-to-jaffna-public-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=54008","title":{"rendered":"Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu  Hands Over  16,000 Books From India to Jaffna Public Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By<\/p>\n<p>Meera Srinivasan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu handed over as many as 16,000 books to the iconic Jaffna public library on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The collection will be kept at the \u2018India Corner\u2019 in the library, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated during his maiden visit in 2015. \u201cThe titles cover topics ranging from culture, literature, philosophy, politics to science,\u201d Chief Librarian Suganthy Sadasivamoorthy told The Hindu on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The new books, mostly in Tamil, will add to the library\u2019s existing collection of nearly 1,00,000 books sourced over the last three decades. In June 1981, the library lost many of its precious titles and manuscripts when an organised mob of Sinhalese set fire to the building.<\/p>\n<p> Today, the white-coloured imposing structure \u2014 renovated and rebuilt in the late 1990s under President Chandrika Kumaratunga \u2014 draws scores of students and researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of interest in Indian literature and culture among students and researchers here,\u201d Ms. Sadasivamoorthy said.<\/p>\n<p>A Thanjavur-based organisation, the Karanthai Tamil Sangam, collected the books for donation to the library.
