Missing Persons Tally 111;50 People Injured.500,000 Affected."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><br \/>\nBy Norman Palihawadana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bodies of 111 persons believed to have died in floods last week haven\u2019t been found yet, senior police and military officers said yesterday. <\/p>\n<p>By yesterday evening, authorities reported the recovery of 151 bodies in flood affected areas in the South, Kalutara and Ratnapura. <\/p>\n<p>About 50 people had been injured and about a half a million affected by floods and earthslips, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.<\/p>\n<p>The South-West monsoons unleashed torrential rains, which ravaged fourteen districts in the western and southern parts of the country on Friday and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne told The Island that the Indian navy would help clean wells in the Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Gampaha Districts. India had responded swiftly in the wake of the catastrophic situation here due to floods, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne yesterday met senior officials of the Government Medical Officers\u2019 Association (GMOA) officials and trade unions to discuss ways and means of providing disaster victims of medical care.<\/p>\n<p>GMOA sources told The Island that they had agreed to deploy medical teams on voluntary basis. The GMOA said that more than 100 of its members had so far volunteered to serve the displaced. It said that medical teams would soon be deployed at Ratnapura and Galle in addition to those already deployed at Matugama and Bulathsinhala.
