{"id":53184,"date":"2017-05-26T17:29:42","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T21:29:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=53184"},"modified":"2017-05-26T17:31:44","modified_gmt":"2017-05-26T21:31:44","slug":"91-killed-and-110-missing-due-to-floods-and-lanslides-in-sabaragamuwa-and-southern-provinces-and-gampaha-kalutara-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=53184","title":{"rendered":"91 Killed and 110 Missing Due to Floods and Landslides in Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces and Gampaha, Kalutara Districts."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Maheesha Mudugamuwa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government last evening placed the number of people dead and missing due to raging floods and earthships caused by heavy rains in several parts of the country on Thursday and Friday at 91 and 110, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Deaths were reported from Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kalutara, Gampaha and Matara Districts.<\/p>\n<p>The government deployed armed forces in affected areas to evacuate people while the SLAF sent in choppers for rescue missions. They rescued four persons marooned at Ayagama, two at Neluwa, nine at Pahiyangala, one at Upper Neluwa and five in Kahawatte by 3 pm yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Two persons were killed in Biyagama in Gampaha while 30 went missing at Morawaka in Matara. Nine persons were killed in an earth-slip at Bulathsinhala in Kalutara. Earthslips in Ratnapura killed ten, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A falling tree killed a 52-year-old man in Kahawatta during heavy rains. The victim was on his way home after buying grocery. Three women were killed by collapsing earth mounds at Sapugaskanda and Devinuwara areas. Two women were inside a house at the time an embankment collapsed and they died after being admitted to Ragama Hospital. In a separate incident one woman died when a retention wall collapsed on a house at Gandara.<\/p>\n<p>The DMC said 7,856 people from 2,811 families had been affected by floods and landslides in seven districts including Hambantota, Galle, Matara, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura and Kegalle.<\/p>\n<p>The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) yesterday extended the landslide warnings issued on Thursday in Ratnapura, Kegalle and Galle Districts as heavy rains continued to lash those regions.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of Elapatha, Pelmadulla, Kuruwita, Eheliyagoda, Kiriella, Imbulpe, Ayagama and Kahawatta Divisional Secretariat areas have been asked to remain alert in view possible landslides.<\/p>\n<p>People in areas such as Bulathkohupitiya and Dehiowita in Kegalle District and Baddegama, Yakkalamulla and Nagoda in Galle District have also been asked to be alert as there is the possibility of landslides occurring there.<\/p>\n<p>Overflowing of the Nilwala Ganga in Matara affected the vehicular movement in the area. Vehicular movement in Thunmodara and Kaluaggala areas too was hampered. The Ratnapura town as partially submerged and roads that run through it were impassable yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The Meteorology Department predicted further showery rains in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North-western provinces and heavy rains of about 150mm were also expected at some places today.<\/p>\n<p>Showers or thundershowers were also expected at several places in the Eastern and Uva provinces. Fairly strong winds at times up to 50-60kmph could be expected over the country. Those winds could strengthen during showers, the Met Department said.<\/p>\n<p>Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said the water levels of hydro power reservoirs had not yet increased significantly and, therefore, the sluice gates of the reservoirs would not be opened.
