The much-awaited short list of Gratiaen Prize 2016 was announced at the British Council auditorium yesterday evening at a simple ceremony.<\/p>\n

The short listed works are:<\/p>\n

1. “Introspection”(poetry) by Jean Arasanayagam<\/p>\n

2. “The Memory of Loss”(novel) by Rizvina Morseth de Alwis<\/p>\n

3. “Short eats” (short stories) by Shehan Karunatilaka<\/p>\n

4. “Stories” (novel) by Charulatha Abeysekera Thewarathanthri, and<\/p>\n

5. “Borrowed Dust a collection of poems” by Vivimarie VanderPoorten<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

British Council\u2019s Country Director Keith Davies, addressing the gathering said there had been 55 entries this year and he was proud to be a part of the memorable event. “The event has stood the test of time.”<\/p>\n

The coveted Gratiaen Prize is awarded each year to the best submitted creative work in English written by a Sri Lankan writer resident in Sri Lanka. Both published works and unpublished manuscripts are accepted as submissions to the prize, founded by well known author Micheal Ondaatje.<\/p>\n

The Gratien Prize 2016 is the second to be awarded under the new partnership between Gratiaen Trust and Sarasavi Book Shop.<\/p>\n

Only Vivimarie Vanderpooten and Charulatha Abeysekara Thewathantri were present the ceremony and others were either overseas or were unable to take part.<\/p>\n

The judges are Prof Sasanka Perera, (The Chair of the judging p anel), Cultural Anthropolgist and bilingual cultural commentator Prof. Chandana Dissaanayake, Academic and creative writer and Ruhanie Perera, performer and performance maker and lecturer.<\/p>\n
