{"id":52176,"date":"2017-03-25T19:38:04","date_gmt":"2017-03-25T23:38:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=52176"},"modified":"2017-03-25T19:38:46","modified_gmt":"2017-03-25T23:38:46","slug":"retd-admiral-promotes-foreign-intervention-in-sri-lanka-by-calling-for-un-special-rapporteur-to-probe-ltte-war-crimes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=52176","title":{"rendered":"Retd Admiral Sarath Weerasekera  Promotes Foreign Intervention in Sri Lanka by Calling For UN Special Rapporteur to Probe LTTE War Crimes."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By<\/p>\n<p>Rasika Jayakody<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Former Parliamentarian Sarath Weerasekera flew to Geneva last week to present what he termed a special report on war crimes allegations against the Sri Lankan military forces, to the UNHRC session.<br \/>\nThe former Parliamentarian said, his report contained evidence to \u2018protect\u2019 Sri Lanka\u2019s war heroes from foreign prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>Although Weerasekera\u2019s supporters told the local media that Weerasekera will present a special report to the UN Human Rights Commissioner, a spokesperson from the UNHRC Chief\u2019s office said no one requested a meeting with the High Commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he attended a side event in Geneva, like many other Sri Lankan NGO activists and diaspora group members.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the UNHRC side event, the former UPFA Parliamentarian urged the United Nations General Assembly to appoint a Special Rapporteur into the alleged war crimes committed by the LTTE during the Eelam war.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Weerasekera spoke at a side event titled \u2018Truth and Justice\u2019 organized by the International Buddhist Relief Organization (IBRO), a non-governmental organization with UN accreditation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeerasekera\u2019s request internationalizes Sri Lanka\u2019s issue. It is a 180 degree turn from the government\u2019s stance which suggests a Sri Lanka-led process for reconciliation and accountability. Weerasekera clearly calls for a foreign intervention,\u201d representatives of the government told the Srj Lankan media, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the side event, Weerasekera said, the Sri Lankan armed forces did not commit any war crimes during the final phase of the Eelam war.
