{"id":51861,"date":"2017-03-08T02:22:39","date_gmt":"2017-03-08T07:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=51861"},"modified":"2017-03-08T19:39:58","modified_gmt":"2017-03-09T00:39:58","slug":"un-resolution-co-sponsored-by-sri-lanka-is-not-binding-on-sovereign-nations-says-harsha-de-silva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=51861","title":{"rendered":"UN Resolution Co-sponsored by Sri Lanka is not Binding on Sovereign Nations says Harsha de Silva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Zacki Jabbar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pointing out that UN resolutions were not binding on a sovereign nation, the government said yesterday that neither the UN Human Rights Council nor the international community had demanded that Sri Lanka adopt a federal solution to resolve its ethnic issue.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Foreign Minister Harsha de Silva, addressing a news conference at the Information Department in Colombo, said that the latest report on Sri Lanka by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights  Zeid bin Ra\u2019ad al-Hussein, had no relevance whatsoever to what the government was doing at the ongoing 34th UN Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A UN resolution had no impact on a sovereign nation, he note adding that as Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had said that there were many detours, but the destination remained the same in relation to UN Resolution 30\/1 on accountability issues arising out of the war.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a big difference between Resolution 30\/1 and Zeid bin Ra\u2019ad al-Hussein\u2019s report, which was a technical rollover,&#8221; de Silva observed.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the government was studying Hussein\u2019s report and would respond accordingly after consultations with all concerned including the countries that Co-Sponsored Resolution 30\/1.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to a question, the Deputy Minister said that neither the UNHRC nor the international community had called for a federal solution to Sri Lanka\u2019s ethnic issue.<\/p>\n<p>Emphasising that the government had adopted a policy of zero tolerance with regard to human rights violations including torture by investigative authorities, he said that much of Resolution 30\/1 had been implemented.<\/p>\n<p><em>Courtesy:The Island<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"tweetbutton51861\" class=\"tw_button\" style=\"float:right;margin-left:10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdbsjeyaraj.com%2Fdbsj%2F%3Fp%3D51861&amp;text=UN%20Resolution%20Co-sponsored%20by%20Sri%20Lanka%20is%20not%20Binding%20on%20Sovereign%20Nations%20says%20Harsha%20de%20Silva&amp;related=&amp;lang=en&amp;count=horizontal\" class=\"twitter-share-button\"  style=\"width:55px;height:22px;background:transparent url('https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-tweet-button\/tweetn.png') no-repeat  0 0;text-align:left;text-indent:-9999px;display:block;\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Zacki Jabbar Pointing out that UN resolutions were not binding on a sovereign nation, the government said yesterday that neither the UN Human Rights Council nor the international community had demanded that Sri Lanka adopt a federal solution to resolve its ethnic issue.
