Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Tuesday admitted that there had been a breakdown in party discipline in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and suggested a \u201cclean break\u201d from the Joint Opposition led by her successor Mahinda Rajapaksa.<\/p>\n

The Joint Opposition was not a \u201chuge threat\u201d to the future of the SLFP, Kumaratunga told Foreign Correspondents at the ONUR office this week, even though some party members were concerned that the JO would \u201cgobble\u201d the party up.<\/p>\n

The former President said that SLFP unity had been \u201ctemporarily\u201d broken, accusing ex-President Rajapaksa of orchestrating the split. \u201cThe same gentleman who is leading the SLFP split now, split the party twice before,\u201d Kumaratunga asserted.<\/p>\n

There had been a breakdown in party discipline with SLFP members making diverse statements on party policy, she said, adding \u201cI have sacked many people for much less.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kumaratunga said she was convinced could go it alone politically without the Joint Opposition. \u201cIn the history of elections in Sri Lanka, a third force has never been successful,\u201d she analysed.<\/p>\n

The SLFP should break with \u201ccrooks and murderers\u201d and go it alone, Kumaratunga said.<\/p>\n

Every time we have gone to the people, they have come with us. With a strong campaign, the people will come with us again, the former President said. \u201cI am confident of that.\u201d (DB)<\/p>\n
